Facts About Some of Our Favorite Lakes

The state of North Carolina is known for its picturesque views whether that be beachfront, mountaintop, or lakefront. With all the outdoor activities available ranging from hiking to fishing, it is a beautiful state that offers something for everyone to enjoy. This blog post by Motor Boatin’ shares facts about some of our favorite lakes in the local area: Falls, Jordan, Harris, and Kerr Lake.

Learn more about 4 of our favorite lakes in North Carolina:

1. Falls Lake: Falls Lake covers over 12,000 acres. Its peaceful atmosphere is great for camping, hiking, or laying out in the sun on a sandy beach. It is named after “Falls of the Neuse” which was once a whitewater section of the Neuse River. Although there’s no more whitewater areas, it is the perfect spot for families to boat, fish, or swim in uncrowded waters.

2. Jordan Lake: With over 13,000 acres, Jordan Lake is a common choice for many families, especially with children because of all the activities available. This lake was created for the New Hope River Valley (now known as Research Triangle Park) based on water resource needs. In 1963, the project was named New Hope Lake. The name was changed in 1973 to B. Everett Jordan Lake in honor of a senator.

3. Harris Lake: Located on the Shearon Harris Reservoir, Harris Lake covers over 4,000 acres. It encompasses a park of around 680 acres that includes trails, picnic areas, a disc golf course, and more. It is a quiet and well-maintained area to spend your day at.

4. Kerr Lake: Kerr Lake is one of the largest lakes in the entire state and takes up over 50,000 acres. Surrounding the lake are vast forests where common NC mammals such as white-tailed deer, gray squirrels, red foxes, and many more call home. With 500 miles of shoreline and 3,400 acres of recreation sites, there is plenty of beauty to take in at Kerr Lake.

All these lakes are close to home but offer that sense of a unique getaway. Get out there and explore all North Carolina has to offer by renting with Motor Boatin’. On a lake is our favorite place to be. Reserve your boat today and contact us with any questions you may have.

5 Reasons Why Renting is More Practical Financially Than Owning a Boat

Cruising through serene waters is an experience like no other, but many boaters ask, “Is it smarter financially to own a boat or continue to rent?” At Motor Boatin’, we believe that renting is more practical financially than owning a boat, and we pride ourselves in providing affordable rentals for all to get out on the water.

Here are five reasons why we believe that renting is more practical financially than owning:

  1. Boats carry a hefty price tag: Purchasing a boat is a huge investment. In addition, like cars, boats depreciate value over time which is also something to consider. With affordable renting options like Motor Boatin’, it is a better idea to rent when wanting to get out on the water rather than paying that large price tag.
  2. Renting lets you choose different types of boats: When purchasing a boat, an individual is stuck with only one kind of boat. However, there are tons of boats out there like fishing or pontoon boats that all serve different purposes. Renting allows boaters to pick what type of watercraft will be suitable for them for that day, leading them to new kinds of experiences.
  3. Boats require regular maintenance: In addition to the upfront cost of buying a boat, individuals must also pay for maintenance and repairs. This can add up quickly, and it also takes time out of the owner’s day to do the required work or find someone to do it for them.
  4. It removes stress off the boater: Owning a boat can become very stressful. Some boat owners must worry about where they will keep their boat, what. By renting, individuals can just arrive at the lake, hop on the boat, and start cruising.
  5. Motor Boatin’ can provide assistance: When renting, Motor Boatin’ is able to help all our boaters while out on the water. If they were riding a boat of their own, they wouldn’t be able to have assistance. We can provide our knowledge on topics such as safety procedures and how to properly operate the boat.

Boaters don’t need their own boat to be able to enjoy the lake life!  If you are considering renting from us, reserve your boat today. Contact us with any questions you may have.

Different Pontoon Boat Sizes – 10 People vs. 17 People

Pontoon boats come in many different sizes—both in length and width. Naturally, the larger the boat, the more its seating capacity is. At Motor Boatin’, we have pontoons of various sizes and capacities. This includes models designed for 10 people, 12, 14, and even 17 people.

So, what is difference in lengths that makes each one accommodate those numbers? Generally, for 10 or more people, a pontoon boat should start at 22 feet long. On the other hand, for a pontoon to hold 17 people comfortably, the sizes start increasing to 30 feet or longer.

Among our longer and larger pontoons, we have a Bentley Navigator. These run around 23 feet and hold up to 14 people. Our Crest Classic Pontoon, the largest in our fleet, holds 17 people and is over 24 feet long.

To see the models of pontoons that we have and their capacities, click here. This list includes our 10 person, 12 person, 14 person and 17 person boats.

But, it’s not just size that makes these boats the best option to rent. Pontoon boats have a great advantage in that they are much more versatile than other watercraft. They can be easily anchored out in the lake or pulled up near a shore line. You can also pull a tube or a skier behind our pontoons.

Plus, you can fish off of a pontoon or easily hold a picnic. Pontoons can troll along at a leisurely speed or go just a little bit faster without feeling as bumpy on the waves as other boats can.

Pontoons, no matter the size, really are the ideal boat to rent for family events on the lake. To reserve yours today, contact us at Motor Boatin’ by clicking here or calling us at 919-800-9716. We look forward to seeing you out on the lake!

Cold-Weather Boating: What to Wear

At Motor Boatin’, we believe that Triangle residents should be able to enjoy boating all year long even during the wintertime. To do this, it is important to wear the right gear for the winter weather so that boaters stay comfortable throughout their trip – thinking ahead is key. This blog post is dedicated to sharing our five favorite clothing items for cold-weather boating.

Before we begin, we should note that it is ideal to have all your clothing items be waterproof from your headwear to your shoes. This ensures that you stay dry which ultimately affects your warmth.

Here are five clothing items you’ll need for your next winter boating adventure:

  1. Fishing hat: You should pack a hat that covers both your head and your ears from the wind and cold air. Extremities of the body are especially vulnerable to the winter weather.
  2. Neck gaiter: A neck gaiter can keep both your neck and face warm and protect your skin against the harsh weather conditions. These can also be used in the summer to fight sunburn, making them an all-year boating accessory.
  3. Layered jackets: While jackets are an obvious essential, it is also important to grab lots of layers. For example, one might wear a Gore-Tex materialled jacket on top with a wool or fleece sweatshirt underneath. Layers allow for the most flexibility when out on the boat. It is also a good idea to wear brightly colored clothing for safety purposes. If one were to go overboard, it is much easier to spot bright yellows and oranges.
  4. Dry suit: For those who frequently go out on winter fishing trips, you might consider purchasing a dry suit. These items not only provide warmth but also cold-water protection. These suits are known to have saved lives in the coldest of temperatures for both boaters and divers which makes these items a worthwhile investment.
  5. Thick boots: Not only should fishing boots keep you warm, but they should also be slip resistant. Having a heavy-duty pair of boots paired with thermal socks can keep those fishing feeling comfortable all day long.

Just because temperatures are dropping around the Triangle doesn’t mean you have to cancel all your boating trips! At Motor Boatin’, we offer watercraft rentals all year long – including January and December. For more winter weather boating questions or to book with us, call 919-800-9716 today.

Funny (But Important) FAQs That We Get Asked

Operating a boat or personal watercraft can seem a little challenging especially the first time. For this reason, those new to boating come in with all kinds of questions. Although at first glance they may sound funny to experienced boaters, they are all valid questions that deserve to be answered.

Here are four of our frequently asked questions:

  1. Where are the brakes? There are actually no brakes on any type of watercraft. This stresses the importance of not speeding while operating and shows why speeding is one of the leading causes of boat collisions. Drivers can however use reverse to slow the watercraft down.
  2. How do I stop Jet Skis? Jet Skis are included when we say there are no brakes in all watercraft. Individuals can use reverse to help maneuver and to slow down, but there is no way to completely stop. If you are unable to slow down, remember to stop the engine way before getting ashore. This will prevent damage to the motor of the Jet Ski.
  3. Why is the boat not moving? First, is the motor down in the water? If not, that is the problem. This is actually a more common question than you may think. To fix this, use the trim button on the gear shifter and squeeze it down to put the motor down. This will allow the motor to work properly and ensure that the boat starts moving. Boaters don’t realize while they have their hand on the shifter, their thumb is almost always on the trim up/down button and they press the button up while pushing the shifter.  To correct the motor out of the water, press the button down.
  4. Why isn’t my boat cranking? Before doing anything else, check to make sure the kill switch is attached and that the shifter is in neutral. Otherwise, this could be an actual problem. To prevent any possible damage, immediately call us at (919)-800-9716 for further assistance.

We have heard all types of questions throughout the years. Don’t hesitate to contact us for any other questions you may have (even if they may be a little funny at first). 5 Health Benefits of Fishing

Many people see fishing as a fun pastime, but did you know that fishing actually has many physical and mental health benefits as well? From increasing vitamin D intake to reducing stress levels, fishing provides a large range of benefits for personal health which makes it good for the body and mind.

Here are five health benefits of fishing:

  1. Increase in vitamin D intake: Whether it’s a sunny or cloudy day, one can get vitamin D while fishing. Vitamin D plays a vital role in boosting our immune systems and keeping our bones healthy. It also helps regulate moods and can make people happier overall.
  2. Provides exercise: Fishing is surprisingly a great, low-impact exercise. It engages a person’s shoulders, back, arms, core, and legs. Research shows that just being outdoors also encourages a healthier lifestyle.
  3. Improves blood pressure: Spending time fishing has been shown to decrease a person’s blood pressure. Being surrounded by nature for even just 30 minutes lowers blood pressure and improves overall health by reducing the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
  4. Boosts concentration: Over time, studies have shown that adults have far shorter attention spans than in previous decades. By unplugging and directing their attention toward fishing, individuals can boost their short-term concentration. Throughout many fishing sessions, people can improve their long-term concentration over time.
  5. Reduces stress: Many people are aware of the relaxation that fishing brings. Fishing relieves pressure and stress that one might feel. Similar to meditation, fishing takes a person’s mind off of any internal thoughts or stress.

Fishing is an activity everyone can enjoy and provides health benefits for all ages. If you and your family are looking to rent a fishing boat, consider Motor Boatin’. We also provide packed tackle boxes, rods, and fresh bait. Reserve a spot today!

5 Pet Safety Tips While Boating

Safety is the number one priority for all passengers of a boat or any other watercraft and this includes the safety of our furry friends. Pet owners shouldn’t have to risk the well-being of their pets in order to enjoy a nice boat ride with them.

Here are five pet safety tips while boating:

  1. Bring a pet life jacket: Life jackets are essential for humans but also for pets. Even though most dogs can swim, swimming becomes harder in rougher currents or if they are fatigued. Therefore, buying a life jacket that fits securely is important to reduce any potential risks.
  2. Pack lots of water: Water is a necessity for any boat ride but especially for warmer days. Having a bowl and cold water readily available allows for pets to drink throughout the day to stay hydrated.
  3. Plan for bathroom breaks: Planning times throughout the day for bathroom breaks is always a good idea when boating with any kind of animal. Some dogs may prefer to use a potty pad while on board, but others may feel more comfortable using real grass ashore.
  4. Apply sunscreen: Pets need sunscreen too! Many pet owners forget to think about bringing sunscreen for their animals, however, it is very important for their skin. Dogs that are light-colored or have thin fur are at higher risk of becoming sunburned.
  5. Make a canine first aid kit: Much like a human first aid kit, a canine first aid kit is useful if boat passengers come across any dangerous situations with their animals. Some possible items to pack are antibiotics for cuts, gauze, or any other emergency supplies.

Following these tips when planning a day out on the water with your furry friend can lead to many wonderful memories. If you are looking to rent a boat or other types of watercraft in the Triangle area, consider Motor Boatin’. Reserve a spot today or contact us for any questions.

Jet Ski Safety Tips

Riding a Jet Ski is a fun way to spend a lake day. When out on the water, it is important to follow safety guidelines to ensure an enjoyable yet safe ride. Motor Boatin’ provides some safety tips for anyone looking to ride a Jet Ski.

Here are five safety tips for riding a Jet Ski:

  1. Take an online boating safety course: Online safety courses are available to inform individuals with all different kinds of boating backgrounds of the safety guidelines that should be enforced at all times. On our website, we provide a free safety course to get started.
  2. Wear a life jacket: One of the most crucial safety precautions when riding any personal watercraft is wearing a life jacket. The driver and all passengers of the Jet Ski should be wearing a life jacket at all times regardless of their swimming abilities. It is also important that the jacket fits correctly. Wearing a life jacket that is too loose or too tight can cause it to not work properly.
  3. Maintain distance and don’t speed: Like cars, speeding is one of the leading causes of accidents on the water. With this, it is a good idea to maintain a safe distance when riding near other Jet Skis to prevent any serious accidents.
  4. Never drink alcoholic beverages when operating: Drinking when operating a Jet Ski can impair a driver’s judgment and cause unsafe conditions. This makes it very dangerous for not only the driver but also the passengers riding. North Carolina prohibits any person from being under the influence when operating all types of watercraft.
  5. Stay alert: When riding on public waters, there can be other individuals on all types of watercraft. It is important to be mindful of others and to always stay alert to ensure the safety of everyone riding and those in close proximity.

Safety is our number one priority. If you are interested in renting a Jet Ski or any other personal watercraft, consider Motor Boatin’. Check our availability and reserve a spot today. Contact us for more information or any questions you may have.
